Lighting is so important when planning a room redesign.

The lighting fixtures in a room can make or break your design job.   Most Redesigners and Home Stagers realize this importance because they want their work to be seen!

Don't consider lighting an after thought.   A room's lighting scheme should be just as important as furniture placement.  A lighting plan should relate to the overall design plan for a room.

The first step is to determine how the room will be used.  Will the room be used for reading, writing or for cozy conversations?  Or, will the kitchen be used for preparing food and for dining?  In each situation, choose the appropriate lighting according to what the room will be used for.

Most rooms have 3 types of lighting.

  • Ambient Lighting - is background lighting that can come from ceiling fixtures, floor or table lamps.
  • Task Lighting - is localized lighting for a specific area or activity such as reading or writing and can come from floor lamps or table lamps.
  • Accent Lighting -  comes from small fixtures such as down lights, up lights, spotlights and track lights and are recessed or mounted on the wall.

You really can't overdue lighting because you don't have to have all lighting fixtures on at the same time.  If lighting is placed in a triangular arrangement it will be pleasing to the eye.

Natural light is always best, but when this is not possible, choosing the appropriate lighting that will illuminate any area is very important.  Give special consideration to dining areas, conversation areas and work areas and don't forget about the kitchen area.

There are many many lighting options, so show your home off in the best light possible!
